EDMONTONS FIRST DISTILLERY

The distillery was born from the ashes of The Baby Seal Club, a tiny little venue that hosted many memorable events in the Edmonton music scene and earned a dedicated following. The BSC had run its course, and the fertile space needed an idea, which came to Adam Smith while visiting another distillery on Vancouver Island, who were operating in an equally small space.

The relaxation of the Alberta’s minimum production levels was happening around that time, making the idea realistic. After touring distilleries all over the Western USA, as well as exploring some more rustic distilling operations in SW Mexico, it became an obsession. The advice and experience of these first trips would prove invaluable.

We looked all over the world for the best equipment and ended up doing one more tour through the USA from Edmonton across the mighty Mississippi to Missouri, then down to Tennessee. We brought back a custom made still made up of 6000lbs of copper and stainless steel.

Strathcona Spirits received their first license to start distilling in 2014. After honing our recipes under the mentorship of a well regarded Master Distiller from Oregon, and scouring Alberta for unique and interesting grains and botanicals, then putting together our brand, product finally hit shelves in December of 2016. It was a long, fun, and challenging road.
